Well I just wanted to give a bit more detail on yesterdays update.

Currently the kids and I just enjoyed a week off from school for Spring Break. We sent Chris down to KTN to meet with our contractor. So YES, that means we are moving back home this summer. Chris will be home at end of June and the kids and I will be home early August. We decided to add some square footage to our Pond Reef house. The boys are ready to get back home and us girls are getting there. Lizzy and I are excited to go home but are going to miss Dutch terribly.

The kids are doing great in school. Indoor soccer just finished this weekend. Lizzy played jr high basketball this yr which ran at the same time but that ended at the end of Feb. We are looking forward to slowing down a bit for after school activities. But we will be plenty busy getting ready for home.

Chris had quite an adventure so far with his trip, heres a short version. He was scheduled to leave last Saturday but ALL flights were cancelled due to 80+ winds here in Dutch. That meant he missed his connection in ANC for SUN to KTN. He got out on Sun to ANC but couldn't make it straigh to KTN. He ended up with a confirmation ticket for TUES and ended up leaving MON on stand by. He went to KTN via SEA!!.....He had a great visit and was ready to start his trip home when in ktn he was told his ticket was CANCELLED because he missed his 1st connection. But he made it on the plane only to over night in Juneau and is now in ANC for the night with his friend John and we HOPE weather permitting he will be home around 4pm tomorrow!

Hello everyone! Just wanted to give a quick hello and let everyone know we are doing great. Sorry we missed you call today Ken. I will call you back I am home to grab the video camera and have to empty my memory card so I figure this was a good time to check/update the blog. I will give a better update tonight, since I am supposed to take it easy after having a tooth pulled this morning. So once I get home from Lizzy's last soccer game I will give a better update. Ketchikan Trip

SUPRISE

Well for those of you who don't know already, SURPRISE we all came home for a visit. It has been great to sneak up on people. Chris is here until the 5th and the kids and I are here until the 15th.

It has been a great week so far and we have greatly enjoyed the sunshine along with everyone else. Lizzy and Micah had a great time up at Orton Ranch. Lucky kids.

We are currently looking into buying a new house on the north end so that means selling our Pond Reef property. So we shall see , it has been an eventful week already running around getting our ducks in a row. So keep your fingers crossed for us we are excited about this new house for our family to come back to but that also means saying good bye to our piece of land that we love.

Anyway we hope to get to see everyone there are many hugs to make up for and it is great to be home. And yes this is home even though I have become quite fond of Dutch Harbor.

Update

Well we are still out here in good ole Dutch. Waiting for summer to arrive we thought it was here but I think its just teasing us. We still have patches of snow on the mountains(large hills...lol).

Today is the 4th and we went and watched the "parade" the kids got some candy and the weather managed to stay dry for us. There was a free BBQ for all to enjoy...can't remember who put it on. We ate and ran because it was COLD outside. We have low lying fog a bit of mist the non stop breeze and it was maybe 45 degrees out. brrrrr

The kids are happy its summer time and I am enjoying my time off too. But we are getting into some bad habits of staying up late and sleeping in. I can't believe that they will be going into 5th and 7th grade. Time is flying way to fast. Pretty crazy to think in just a few days we will have been gone from KTN for 2yrs.

Well just wanted to update everyone who maybe checking in on us. I will try to work on getting more photos up for all to see. Hope everyone is having a good summer too.

We hope we get to actually see the fireworks tonight. Last year they were shot into the clouds but at least it was a bit warmer and dryer. Guess it all depends it I can stay up till midnight. Hugs to all.

This was taken June 28th. We are playing "pirates" version of LIFE its pretty fun. The guy in the photo is my friend Lyle from the "old days". He's in the coast guard and we reconnected out here, it had been since 1992 since we ran into each other and for those curious ones he dated a good friend of mine way back when. :)
This is Tommy's newest game he got it after he finished reading 3 good sized books. The school sent home summer "work" packets but he wanted no part of them, go figure. So we decided on the books instead.
Here is a pic of a young fox right behind my house. It was about 10pm when I spotted him in the driveway and so did our cat Popcorn. I have a pic I need to get uploaded of her getting ready to chase off the fox. It was pretty cute to watch the fox run from her. But it did kinda make me nervous.

So not much of an update. I will work on some kids photos soon. These photos are from a local photo contest for the Visitors Bureau. My friend Terry convinced me to enter it was pretty exciting. The fox photo lost by 3 votes for "peoples choice" to a beautiful panoramic sunset.

Sorry all for the lack of updates. We are all doing well and have been busy with both kids playing indoor soccer. It is quite fun to watch and I'm helping coach Lizzy's team. We have our last games on Saturday. We can not wait till next week for spring break or for tomorrow to get here since it is the last day of school. We had the author Gary Paulsen visit he wrote Hatchet and many other books. I didn't know of him before this week but Tommy's teacher opened my eyes to someone new. Her class wrote to him and he came out to visit. Well that's a bit of what we've been up to and like I said I will be putting more up over break. Thanks for checking in with us.

Sad News

Well a few of you know how are New Year has started off. On Jan 4th I went into the Dr office because I was cramping and they couldn't find a heartbeat. So I went back in on Saturday and recieved the same news. We were told to come back on Monday in hopes of some change and we had no luck. So Monday afternoon I was on a flight to ANC and Tuesday I had an appt with an OB doctor. We were praying for a different answer with the better equipment and doctor with baby history. Well he could't find a heartbeat either so I was scheduled on Wed for him to take my baby. I dont want to use the medical term it's still to hard. So after a rough second week to 2008 I arrived home on Friday and was very happy to be home. The kids took the news ok and are doing ok. I am just taking things one day at a time knowing it will get easier with time.

Hope everyone had a safe and happy holiday. Ours was pretty quiet but we did manage to stay awake and welcome the new year. Lizzy was recovering from a cold and fevers and is much better today. Tommy and I enjoyed watching fireworks from the kitchen window and woke Lizzy for a few minutes to enjoy them to. We found out last week that our "new addition" is a bit behind schedule. hehe We will now be expecting the arrival to be around the 23rd instead of the 13th of July. I prefer the 13th myself but we shall see what's to come. As long as Chris is their and we don't go past the 23rd all will be good.

12.15 First Big Snow

Well on the 15th or the night of the 14th we got our first big snow. The kids were very excited to get out and play in it. It was a great day for it we actually had a bit of sunshine to enjoy too. Let me tell ya the sun doesn't appear as often as back home and we may get less rain then home but KTN definitely get more sun. But I'm not complaining just comparing.

Well we are excited for winter break to be here but during this last week the rain has tried to visit a bit most days so the snow is pretty wet and not much fun for playing in. It looks like it will be here for Christmas but were just not sure if we will get to play in it.

A NEW ADDTION

Well we have some exciting news from the Riley family. We will be coming home for a visit this summer. The kids and I will have about 6 weeks at home. Chris will join us for 2 weeks and hopefully time the birth of our newest family member. YEP you read correctly we are having a baby in mid July. Dutch only has a clinic so they ship ya out of here. So that means we coming home to have another KTN kid. We are very excited well Tommy will only be excited if the baby is a boy. I guess he's had enough with sisters. But we will all have to wait till the day we are blessed to see which sex tips the balance at the Riley house. So we can't wait to come home. See ya in mid JUNE.

This is the newest baby horse. He is at the back tire of my car. I didn't get to pet him, his mom wanted all the attention. He is brand new this year.

He was checking out this puddle and decided to walk around it.

Not sure but I think this might be dad. Lizzy and I think he could use some conditioner.

In these photos I'm not sure why he is making those faces but it did me laugh.

It was a very beautiful day out on Sunday and I'm glad I decided to go for a drive. I was very excited to come upon the horses and have the chance at taking photos of the new baby horse. I just wish they would have come out to say hello to Micah when she was here. (well there's always next time.....we can only hope....)

A bit of snow

This photo is behind our house on the hill. Lizzy and her friend Amber decided to go "sledding". There was no use to point out the lack of snow on the ground. They still had fun sliding down the hill and Tommy even joined them for a bit. This was 11.2 and now its 11.6 and all those patches of snow have been rained away. We woke up Monday morning to sideways rain that lasted all day long. Made us feel like we were in Ketchikan. I'm guessing we probably got close to 2 inches. I still catch myself thinking "yeah the water tank is getting full". Well those will be real thoughts again in about 19 months.

Read the Day Away

On Oct 31st I got to join Tommy and his class for "read the day away". They do this instead of a Halloween Party. The kids have a blast and they get to wear their pajamas and read the day away. They do some silent reading and have guest readers. I was just a listener this time. It was great getting to hang out with his class and enjoy the day. Tommy's favorite thing was getting dressed the night before and not having to change his clothes for school the next morning.
Lunch recess was an indoor one because the weather was pretty nasty blowing rain and snow. The 4th grader got to hang in the music room and blast music and dance. It was fun to watch all them have so much fun.

6th Grade Band Concert

On October 17th the 6th grade class had their first band concert. This photo shows them all hard at work. They did a great job for being their first one. I might add that all of these kids are in the same classroom too. They had to do some shuffling of teachers at the end of last year. The district lost more then they could replace. Lizzy's teacher last year moved to Port Alexander. We have hopes to run into him and his family again. Since they are in our "neck of the woods".

So as you can see Lizzy is using a different hand in the photos. She got her cast off just the week before. She had been practicing with her left hand but in a matter of a few days was able to do a bit of switching. Pretty impressive if you ask me. She definitely gets her musical ability from Chris' side of the family. Her grandpa Ken played trumpet and Chris says he gave it a go when he was around her age. So she has the music gene in her. Not to forget her Uncle Eric one of the greatest drummers I've listened to. And I'm not being biased because he's family.

The Cast is OFF!!!

Well after 6 weeks of patience Lizzy got her cast off. After about 2 weeks the "fun" of being casted had worn off. She was a bit nervous as they started to "saw" the cast off but was reassured that they could not cut her. They were patient and were great every step of they way.

Whew it's off!! She was excited to try and move her fingers and wrist. In this photo she is looking and laughing at the gunk between her fingers and the lovely aroma. Her friend Amber is beside her but quickly backed away as the smell came to her nose.
What a lovely sight left under the cast. I took this photo as we were waiting to get an x-ray to make sure the growth plate looked ok. And sure enough the doctor was pleased with the results. We have to x-ray it in December to check the growth plate and no "ball" sports for another 3 weeks. She is just happy to go swimming again and to get some biking in before the snow comes. Yes I said snow and will cover that topic in another post soon.

Other than that all is well. Can't believe how long it's been between posts I have some making up to do.

Lizzy's broken Pinkie finger

Well Lizzy made the last day of August 2007 a memorable one.

It was Micah's last Friday with us so Lizzy was going to have a few friends stay over that Micah had got to meet. They were all playing outside when she came in and said she hurt her pinkie finger. So I did the usual can u make a fist and she did so I said you'll be fine. Well she bruised pretty good around her knuckle and it swelled pretty good too. She wasn't complaining to much so I gave her some Motrin and sent them to bed. It was still pretty swollen the next morning so after we delivered the last girl home it was off to the clinic we go.

Well as it turned out she broke the growth plate in her finger. And being it was Saturday and a holiday weekend we couldn't talk to a surgeon in ANC until Tuesday. We couldn't cast her until we knew for sure her growth plate was going to heal propely they were thinking she would probably need surgery. So we got a splint and away we went. Us girls ventured up to some of the WWII stuff that Micah hadn't got to see yet. (I will get pics up soon) We had a great time exploring.

On Wednesday we finally found out that it looks ok and we can cast it. So she will be in a cast for 4-5 weeks and no vigorous activity for 8 weeks. She was pretty bummed because she was going to participate in a triathalon the 15th of this month. She was going to do the bike riding portion. Basketball also begins later this month. She will probably get to run scoreboard on Saturdays for the games.

Well on Tuesday night I got a call from Kay and Tim that I thought would probably never happen. I say this only because of our new location otherwise it would've been a given. This will all make sense in a minute. So she calls to say that that there is a possibility that they might send Micah to us for 11 days if we wanted. Well I about jumped through the phone. My answer was yes of course how ever long she can stay we will keep her. So they weren't quite decided yet because it was a choice between us or Micah's aunt. I didn't say anything to Lizzy just in case it didn't work out. But said my prayers and patiently awaited Kay's phone call back. And what do ya know but we get that call and she will arrive in 2 days. We decide to keep this a secret from Lizzy which was no easy task on Micah's or my part. These girls have been keeping in touch with a web cam and can chat too. But we kept it a surprise as you can see in these photo's. It was worth it.
We couldn't be more excited about having her here. It's been a great 2 days so far. It's just like were back home and she's here while her parents are out on the boat. When we were in KTN she was welcome at the drop of hat if needed. So anyways were are all excited except for Tommy was abit bummed that he didn't have a friend from back home on the plane to. He keeps asking me if Brian can come visit and I say if he makes it out here for a visit of course he can. He misses Brian very much. Well I better run we have a busy Saturday planned today.

4th and 6th grade

Well Aug 22nd marked the start of our second school year here. I cant believe how quickly time is going by. They are exctited to see their friends again but not excited about early to bed. And none of us are ready for the early wake up calls.

Well it's our last weekend before school starts. We took a drive out to the end of the road to see if we could find some horses. No luck that time but we did have fun anyway. They found the board and commenced to hitting rocks into the water and aiming for various targets. I was busy taking some of my flower and bee shots and realized I was missing some of the fun.

We had a lot of fun even though the sun didn't come out to visit that day. On the way back we stopped to I could take some more photos and Lizzy jumps out to pick some Salmon berries. Her and Chris were very happy to know that we have them here too. It is amazing how low to the ground the bushes grow here.

Flowers, bees and Fat Cat (8.19)

These clouds are looking toward the back of my house. There was some serious fog following them.

This is our "fat cat". As you can see its a very rough life here at the Riley house. She is 11.
These bee photo's were taken last weekend along with us hitting rocks into lake. (next blog post). I figured I would separate these scenery shots from us. Don't know why but that's how its happening. I like the one of the bee in the air. I didn't realize I had this until I got them into the computer. They sure do grow some big bumblebees here.

Fathers Day 07

Well took me a bit to get these up but here some of how our first Fathers Day was in Dutch.

We actually went camping for the night. It was nice out but a bit breezy not quite like camping back home. This is the beach where we usually see the horses. We did see them off in the distance but I think the campfire kept them away.

The kids were doing sparklers and it was close to midnight figured I didn't want to stay up till 3 when it is actually dark. They had a blast they love to camp.

Chris got a DS lite so we can all play games together. The kids got new ones when we left Ketchikan last summer. They were great for the long train and plane rides. I got Tommy's old one so like I said now we can all play together. They are neat little units and are wireless.

52 weeks

Well Aug 8th marked one full year for the kids and I in Dutch.
It has been a great year. We are enjoying the new scenery and
weather. I do sometimes miss the rain but a dryer climate has been
somewhat spoiling I must admit.
I can't believe the kids will be entering 4th and 6th grade!!! School starts
here on the 22nd so not much longer to go. Lizzy has lived on her bike
all summer and both kids are haveing fun going down to the park to play.
We only have 2 school years left here and then its back home.

7.12.07 Lizzy&Chris on the Bering Sea

Last Thursday Chris and Lizzy got to go out fishing for halibut. Tommy and I weren't able to go because there was only room for 2. It was going to be Chris and I but I gave up my turn for my daughter. Tommy was bummed he didn't get to go but we will have out turn. They had a great day for fishing and got to do some sightseeing too. There was a local with his parents on the boat too. And they were from Minnesota. Chris just laughs because it seems no matter where he goes someone from MN is not to far.

Lizzy enjoyed the day of being out on the Sea. She even got to drive the boat a little bit. The captain is the Aunt to "little" Elizabeth that we babysit.

I love this self portrait of my daughter. She sure can be goofy. I have some more photos of thier trip I will try to get up soon.

Lizzy is 11 and spring is here

Well June 5th Lizzy turned 11. Time surely is going by to quickly. I'm sure you are wondering what is going on with the number 4 candle. Well we didn't have enough single candles so Lizzy spotted the #4 and said we could use it and 7 single candles. A grand idea. She was the last one to have her "1st" birthday here in Dutch. Only 2 more to go and we should be on our way back home.

This little guy is a temporary addition to my babysitting lineup. He is 18months old same age as the little Elizabeth I sit. He likes Lizzy too. I must say that even Tommy is a great help with this one. I think its because he's a boy. I had to take this photo as a "blackmail" (hehe) because little Elizabeth has pretty strong attachment for my Lizzy. He's a great little guy and his parents are real nice too. They've been out here for a little while but they know all about KTN since they have fished there. It's nice to chat with them about home.

Yeah!!! The sun has finally come out 0f hiding. Most of May was cloudy but today we actually hit 50. Tropical weather for here. These photos were actually taken yesterday 6.6.07
The last photo is of a Willow Tree. I will get a better photo when all the leaves come out. It looks more like a bush. I was excited to see the daffodil sneak out of the ground. They are in bloom around town but these are just a few along one side of our yard not in a pot or anything. Well that's all for now. Were happy to see some nice weather so hopefully the next post will have some sunshine and beach in it.

last day of May......Lizzy bday party June1

Well Lizzy's class got to go to the beach and help out a biologist count some mussels. It turned out to be a decent day considering that 2 other field trip got rained out. Thats nothing new for KTN but here it doesn't rain nearly as much. The month of may we saw mostly cloudy days but they were dry up until the last days of school. Well there might have been a few rainy days in May but not good enough to remember.
We also had Lizzy's slumber party on the last day of school. It sure is easier to plan this year without soft/baseball schedules to work around. But we sure do miss the "ball" days. Soon we will be back at it again.
Yes the temp gauge is correct with the timing of the photo of Lizzy getting hosed down. True Alaskan girls wanting to have water fight even when temps are barely above 40. At times you could see their breath out there. They are a nice bunch of kids but we sure miss our ktn friends.

Chris has already been here for 1yr the kids and I hit that mark in Aug. 2 more years to go. All is going good here. The school year definitely went by fast. Lizzy got the presidential fitness award she was 1 of 2 in the 5-6 grade. Pretty awesome if I do say so myself.

The last week of May

Tommy is doing his last "teach n tell" of the year. May25. This is a different version of show n tell. The kids get to "teach" the class about what they bring in or do. Some kids do crafty thing or bring in a video game and show the class. This was a fun one he made the egg float by adding salt to the water.

They are playing around the world with division flash cards. Tommy is going against his friend Donnie. I've had a great time getting to go to his classroom on Fridays this year.

Well these photos were actually about 2 weeks before school let out. The one with the red boarder is at Lizzy's school. The kids get a blank piece of card stock paper which they call an "art card". At the end of the year you can turn some in and then they have a "art card trade" with multiple grades. It was neat to get to see the different styles of art work. The middle one is Tommy with his friend Buddy. They have been friends since day one. The art work with the blue matte is Tommy's. And the lone one of Lizzy is her at the 5-6th Poetry Cafe. It was very dark with just a spotlight on them. She did very well you could actually hear her. Earlier that day the dentist help "pull/pop" out 2 baby teeth, her canine teeth on the top. The 2 teeth that border your front four. Everyone was amazed at how tough she was to come the cafe after having 2 teeth "pulled".

Well these photo's were taken a week ago and things aren't much greener yet. Spring is a bit on the slow side for Dutch. We have been happy to get to see the horses. The "avalanche" that Chris climbed into someone had made a snow cave inside to camp in and from what we heard they spent a few nights in it. Pretty crazy if you ask me. We had a good laugh at the horse on his back. He and the other one to the left were rolling around on the ground. I have never seen that before, I just wish I had my video camera with us. Well I will try to get some new ones of the kids up soon. Lizzy has her 11th birthday party on Friday(June1) which happens to be the last day of school also. We are hoping for nice weather so we can go to the beach and run around. Her birthday isn't until Tues but we thought it would be fun to have it the Friday before especially since its the last day of school too. And we don't have any softball (boohoo) schedule to work around.

Well as you can see spring is not quite here yet. There are new grasses starting to grow. The willow "trees" are starting to bud also. So were hoping spring is truly on the way.
I decided to go for a drive yesterday to see if I could get up close to some horses. Chris and I took a drive Monday and spotted some but they were pretty far off in the distance.
I had the 5yr old that I watch with me so it was pretty exciting to find the horses. Even got to scratch a few on the head. The picture of the one in the rear view mirror was kind of a suprise. They were all on the side of the car in the grass and the next thing you know is there's one right behind us. Can't wait for the scenery to turn green and see what kind of flower there are. So everyone keeps saying June is when spring arrives here so we shall see. Lizzy will turn 11 at the beginning of June and wants to got to the beach so we hope the weather holds just a bit. The winds can be a bit chilly still with all the snow on the hills.We just passed the nine month mark for being here and it has gone quite quickly. We can't believe the school year is almost over. All in all it's been a good school year here.

I took these photo's figuring the snow was going away. This just up the road from our house. Actually it's the end of the road for this stretch. I liked the WW2 buildings still trying to stand. It just amazes me how much of it is around and how abundant it is. They were all over this island. Chris and I are always in awe of some of the places you see this stuff. It could not have been easy to get supplies to some of the locations.

Easter 2007

Easter weekend the weather was pretty nice here. I was asked on Sat before Easter to take some photo's of baby Elizabeth for her mom since she was heading up the big hunt at the PCR(rec center). So Lizzy and I went Tommy elected to stay home even though the event went up to 9. Oh well Lizzy and I had fun watching baby Elizabeth and all the other little ones. We also ended up helping hide eggs between rounds. They hid 500 eggs for 4 age groups. No shredded paper here to sift through but the kids enjoyed it anyway. We had some spring like weather for the weekend but then the snow came back.

Well this morning we woke to more snow. Our front door was completely "drifted" in with snow. As you can see so is my car. We probably got around 2 inches but with these drifts its really piled up in places. The weather is calling for more possibly up to 6 more by Thursday morning. So who knows how much that will actually be.
We have been getting teased with some "spring" weather this month. But every time we think the snow is gone for good it comes back again. I have some photos of the kids down at the park playing with no snow. I will try to get the site updated over the weekend.
Easter Sunday was a nice day here. We heard it wasn't so nice in KTN. Well better run for now. Maybe I will have more snow pics tomorrow but hopefully not......

Well the other night Chris went to step outside and he looked toward the car and there was this little fox. So he quietly called for us to come and see and of course I had to go for the camera. It was almost 8pm so it was just starting to get dark outside and trying to get my flash to him was difficult. He stayed at the end of the car for a few photo's even after we opened the door. Then it went around the corner so Lizzy and I ran to my bathroom window to have another look. And there it sat on a snow pile. I took a few more photo's through the window and some through the screen then I decided to try and take out the screen. The fox kept eye contact with me the whole time I was working on the screen. I managed to get it out and not scare him away. I was able to snap a few photo's before he had enough. It was pretty exciting to have it be so close.

I took this photo Sat 3.31 thinking our snow is going to be leaving us. Well Mon 3.26 we had another blizzard. We totaled almost a foot of new snow from that storm and over the previous weekend. Then it rains and melts we think AHHH April is here we can see most of our yard. I happen to mention this to Chris on Sunday 4.1 and Monday morning we wake up to slushy rain and by the time the kids get home from school we had a good 3inches of slush. So as I look out my window 4.7 you can no longer see the grass. So I'm gonna keep my snow comments to my self. We are ready for the snow to be gone and go visit the horses. So we shall see what the weather has in store for us. We hope spring arrives soon.

1st Post for March

Well it's been awhile since my last post. Not much has been going on, which is nice. The kids are having their soccer party Tuesday night. their last game was canceled because the PCR(rec center) had a frozen\busted water pipe that flooded the gym floor. We are hoping the damage isn't to bad. We had a pretty good cold snap the beginning of March. Lots of frozen pipes around town. We had barely 20 degrees out and 40+winds so it was a bit chilly.
I will work on getting some photos of the kids up soon.
Tommy got his Wii(video game) and we are all having a fun time with it.

I like the picture of the rocks with the white outline. It's freezing spray. It's really thick on the backside but I liked the view with just the edges highlighted.

Friday was a beautiful sunny day. One of our first nice days for February. The fox photo I took out of our living room window. It was about 11:30am and I saw that one and a red fox out my window. I was pretty excited but I had my 1yr old with me so I couldn't sneak outside for a better shot. The bird shots I took before I went to school with Tommy. It's fun to see the eagles all the time and so close. They are only a light pole away. :)

I couldn't resist the picture of our cat Hopps. Its funny to see how a cat will play in a box no matter how old they are.

Lizzy great soccer game!

Well indoor soccer season is about half way through. Both kids are playing but in different age groups/team. It's been fun but busy with different practice nights and on Saturday's we have to go to 2 different games. It keeps us busy because I have my 1yr old all day too on Saturday's.
Yesterday's game was most exciting for Lizzy she scored 4 out of 6 goals for her team but they still lost.
She was awesome though. Tommy's game was great too but he is recovering from a sore throat/cold took the game a bit easy.
He did have a sleepover for his birthday on Friday night. He had 2 friends stay the night and they had a great time. For one of his friends was his first all nighter. Tommy and one of his friends both had games on Saturday so by last night they(tommy) was pretty worn out. His cold is getting better but still hanging on. He missed his first days of school this year last week. A bit bummed about that but still very happy over attendance and of course Lizzy still hasn't missed a day.
So that's about all of our excitement here in Dutch. Tommy is getting the new Nintedno Wii and is patiently anticipating its arrival. It has been quite a quest to get our hands one one. We had one that should have been here by his birthday(Feb 1) but the USPS managed to lose it. So luckily if found another one at Dell and they have been super helpful unlike TOYS R US whom after this experience(I will spare you that story) will never spend another cent with.
Well our snow has almost melted away. February has made us feel like we are back in K-town. Has been rainy and windy most of this month. They are calling for some more snow but the ground is so wet would be surprised to see much accumulation. But as I look out the window I do see flakes bigger than a 50cent pieces falling. They sure are pretty when they are big like that.

My car got an booboo!

Well this happened to my car a few weeks ago. Haven't been very good at updating lately. The kids and I were on our home from church it was a very nice day out but cold. The roads were clear but there were a lot of icy parking lots around. We were just traveling along when a truck came sliding out of a parking lot and wham!! We got hit. I was pretty MAD, but after calming down and talking with the guy that hit us and realizing we were all OK I managed to calm down. We were all ok except for my car. We are in need of a new bumper and drivers door, and lots of paint and other misc work. It's going to cost over $6000 to fix it but luckily its his insurance that gets that bill.

Snow Jan24-25 Blizzard

Well we had our first "blizzard" Wednesday night. It the winds were blowing 30-50 with gusts to 70+. We survived didn't get blown away. But the snow sure did fall. They called for 2-4 inched but with the drifts we had close to 2feet and more in places. The driveway where the school buses park had over 2feet of snow blocking them in. We were happy to have no school and Chris even had the day off. I think most of town had the day off.
Well I just checked the weather report and it changed from some snow to yet another "BLIZZARD WARNING" so we shall see what we wake up to. The warning is from 9pm to 9am Sat.

So the picture of Lizzy and Hopps, I took on our snow day and the one of Tommy and Hopps(alone) Lizzy took them on the snow day.

The one photo is our front door around 8pm Wed. night. The snow likes to blow right upon to our doorstep.

The rest of the photos were taken Thursday after the blizzard struck. I know some of these snow drifts look similar to previous snow shots but they are new. The snow had melted and made what was left really dense.We probably had over a foot on the ground still. The pic that looks like a wave, you could see the ground between the snow drift and trailer. You can no longer see the ground anywhere. We are running out of room for the loader to put the snow when he digs us out. It has been very interesting this winter and we are just coming into what "we" usually assume to the snowy season. The kids sure do love playing in the snow and sledding down the big piles.
Well enough rambling for now. Hope everyone is well. If we get any exciting snowfall I will be sure to capture it when I can go outside again. But for now I'm off to Tommy's indoor soccer practice.

Well our blizzard was cancelled during night but not before we got a few more inches of snow. The bad thing is that it started to rain so there is a lot of slush everywhere. We have over 4 inches of snow/slush in the driveway. So we missed that one but I'm sure we will be in for more.

Lizzy and I were going to the store and spotted the Time Bandit in the bay. The cool thing was that on Thursday(18th) Mike Rowe the narrator for the Deadliest Catch came to her school and spoke at and assembly. He talked a lot about his other show Dirtiest Jobs. He had a lot of funny stories. Lizzy said he was really nice and answered quite a few questions. Wish I was back in school that day. Well yeah, but just for that day.

Well it's still snowing and we have a blizzard watch tonight. It's been crazy. We woke up to at least 6 new inches and the drifts were well over a foot in the driveway not just near buildings. It has been fun to have and a bit wild. Since were not used to this stuff. Now if the winds would just settle down a bit the kids could go out and enjoy it. If they don't get lost in it. Tommy told Chris this morning when he looked outside that if it gets any deeper he and Lizzy could play "tunnel tag". I said they probably could do that in the yard right now. It's at least 3 feet deep in our yard next to the house and the drifts are even deeper. One of the problems were having is where to have the snow that is plowed placed. We are filling up the place rather quickly. And much to our sadness there will be NO SNOW DAYS here they do not have any extra days to give away.

Well the picture of our fuel tank got cleared off today when the fuel man showed up. In the one picture you can see where I opened up the back door out into the yard. The photo with the trailer in it where the markers are those are for a fire hydrant and power box. The hydrant is just about completely covered. Anyways, that's what's been going on here and more to come tonight.

Well we would like to hope everyone a happy and healthy new year. We all managed to stay awake for the new year. Of course the kids had no problem. We just stayed home and played a game of monopoly(Nintendo themed) it was fun. Being that this is a themed board game Chris and I had a hard time adjusting to the newly named properties. But otherwise was a fun game. It started snowing Saturday night and didn't stop on Sunday and so needless to say today we awoke to atleat a foot of new snow and drifts that are crazy. Its really breezy out but I managed to get outside and take a few shots. Shooting snow is difficult.

Here are some shots of the side of our house. We sure are glad that we don't have to use that door and hope that the fuel man doesn't need to come for awhile.

The kids and Chris had fun with our bus driver Holly's go cart. They liked driving and Lizzy liked trying to spin circles.

Well I'm finally putting up some text with these photos I like the before snow and after. Since it has been almost 10 days since I last put up some the fire hydrant is pretty much under snow. It snowed for almost 36 hours so for our first day of Jan 2007 there was atleast 12 inches not including the drifts. I will try to post some newer pictures today. We are loving the snow except for Chris when he has to work out in it.

Well we finally got some snow that stayed for awhile. It started to snow early in the week and kept it up for most of the week. Well until last night that is. Last night it started to warm up and this morning it is turning to slush in a hurry. But were hoping there is more on the way for Christmas break. The kids have a lot of fun playing at the park even with snow on the ground. Chris went down with them and they made a snowman or snow dinosaur I think it was. But as you can see they had just as much fun destroying it as building it.

Sunday walk at Puffin Beach

This is a beach we named "Puffin Beach" because the first time we came here there were a whole bunch of Puffins on the cliffs. But they were all gone today.

Well Tommy is known for bringing home wood from the beach. Today was no different he needed a piece of that pallet. When we found out we were moving to Dutch he started bringing home drift wood from the beach every time we went. So needless to say he had a box full in the container when it left.

Was trying here to capture the color of the water. It is a very pretty aqua blue.

Putting up the (fake) tree

Well our first fake Christmas tree. We heard that they bring in containers of real ones but we decided since we have 3 Christmas' here that a fake one will do. It did seem a bit strange to be able to move the branches however you want them. Then we can leave it up longer too. The kids didn't seem to mind, they still had fun decorating it and then as you can see we all took turns taking some family pictures in front of it.

Grandma & Grandpa Riley always get the grandkids a new ornament each year. So I thought I would take a picture of them putting their ornaments on the tree first. Usually they don't get them until Christmas day but since we are here we get to put them on for this holiday.

Friday Night

This photo was taken on our way home from basketball practice. It was after 9pm. Lizzy and I spotted it along side the road so we pulled over and I jumped out of the car to take the pic. I had left my headlights on but they didn't seem to bother the fox. I was probably only 25 feet away from it. I only got one shot snapped off before it went further into the grass. It was a nice clear night which Saturday was the total opposite. We had KTN rain but with 60mph winds. Made running to and from the car a bit of a challenge. Can't wait to get some more of these beautiful creatures.

Friday Drive Part 3

So on our way home we took the long way. If you have had a chance to google earth us you will see the road system go over a mountain and down to the ocean. Of course we had to stop and check out what little bit of snow was left. Chris and Lizzy even had a snowball fight. The scenic picture is looking back down the road toward the sea. It's not the beach where the horses are. When you get down to the water you can go left and head back towards town or go left a mile or two to the end of the road.

Friday Drive Part 2

So we took a drive out to the end of the road. There are 2 groups of horses and we found out that they don't get along. We saw the first group(ones with the beach in the background and heads in the car), then we drove down to the very end of the road to look at the second group. When we drove back and were looking at the first group of horses a horse from the second group started to walk toward us. One of the horses from the first group chased off the second group. It was kinda exciting to watch these events unfold we had no idea they didn't like each other.

In the photo with them sticking their head into the window I am leaning clear over to the passenger seat. Where Chris was sitting. They will put their head in as far as you will let them. We didn't even bring them any treats this time. Our visit was cut short with them one of them kept putting their hindend on the car and using it as a scratching post. Chris said let's go don't want them scratching the car. I was like well with no trees around to use and your buddy won't scratch for ya what else are you going to use. :)

The horse to the far left of the photo is the one who chases the horses. Clear around the corner of this lake out of our view. A lot of people say they hardly see the horses we seem to think it's because they never drive out to them. That or were just lucky.

Friday Drive Part 1

Since there was no school on Friday we decided to take a drive.
On our way out to go see the horses we noticed all the eagles gathered on the side of the road. So needless to say I jumped out of the car and went to take a few pics and see if I could see what they were gathering for. Well I couldn't see what the excitement was but they did let me take some photos. It's always exciting(scary) to get within 10feet of them. They are so big and look at those talons.

Well here we are at the table before we ate. Tommy is behind me protesting the picture. We survived our first Thanksgiving on our own. I managed not to burn anything so I was very happy about that. All in all we had a great meal it was a bit quiet with n o cousins and various other family members around. That's one of the things I cherish about holidays is(was) getting together with as many family members as we could. It's always a good time up at Grandpa and Grandma Riley's especially for the cousins to get together and hang out.

This picture was taken shortly after dinner. Atleast I got Tommy to be in it and smile.

Lizzy was a great help this year. Since we didn't go to Grandma's house I decided to put her in charge of the Pumpkin Pie. She did a great job from start to finish.

We got the kids Cars for a Thanksgiving gift,
you can see Tommy's excitement for it. It's a great movie. We actually got to see it when we were in Texas this summer. They enjoyed watching it with dad since he was in Dutch when we were in Texas. So we got to smell Lizzy's pie bake as we watched the movie. Sorry about the cats eyes glowing above Lizzy on the couch. When I first looked at this picture it kinda freaked me out until I realized it was the cat. I guess when you have a black cat pictures like this are bound to happen.

Well we hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving. We missed not being in Ketchikan or with any family members for that matter. But were thankful to have each other. We love and miss everyone.

the kids playing in the snow. It's hard to capture how big the waves are on film. It was pretty awesome to stand out there and watch and listen to them. The sea is an amazing thing to watch. I love the crashing waves. We(Chris&I) can't wait until later this winter when we get some big storms and can go and see what they look like. It really is beautiful in it's own right here.

Snow???

Well last week(11.17) we got just a bit of snow. We thought we were going to get a good snow storm but I think it all went to Ketchikan. They kept calling for snow but all we got were some high winds. The kids went outside to play in the snow and it was gusting to around 60mph. We thought they were crazy but when your a kid you cant pass up playing in the snow. The picture of the kids on the hill is along our house so if we get some good snow fall they will have a fun place to slide. I figured they wouldn't last 15 minutes but they were out their for over an hour. I had hot cocoa waiting for them when they came inside. We don't have any snow in the forecast but with a long weekend coming up were hoping for some. It definitely doesn't rain nearly as much here as back home. But that is not a complaint just a statement. haha.

A Bit of Snow

Well on 11.08.06 we woke up to this snow. It's not that much but almost 2in on the ground. It was very pretty the night before watching it fall from the sky. We were all hoping for a snow day. But there was school that day. It's the 10th now and most of it is gone from the ground. I like the mountains with snow on them.

The photo with the trailer sticking out is our home. Most of the snow you see is our yard. It goes a bit back too. So we can't wait for some big snow, Lizzy has plans for a "snow fort" so we shall see.

Cats & Homework

Well as you can see our yellow cat whom we lovingly refer to as "fat cat" is having a regular relaxing moment. She likes it on the back of the couch, she has such a rough life.

In the other 2 photos you see Lizzy at her desk trying to do some math homework. I'm not sure if Popcorn is really helping. She kept trying to nudge her arm as she was trying to write. She is definitely Lizzy's cat. She is like a dog when it's bedtime she beats Lizzy to her room. It's rather cute how much she(they) really love each other.

Sunday Drive

Well I took a drive out to the end of the road . The picture of the cove is Morris Cove. My horse pictures were taken out here. Its got a great beach and hardly anyone is ever out there. There were no horses, lots of "sign" but no horses.

This eagle is on a WWII bunker. This was on my way back from Morris Cove. This bunker is right on the side of the road. I thought it was a great shot. With the rain, wind and it sitting on the bunker. Kinda an all American shot.

The rainbows were shot after the eagle. I got about 6 fear from the eagle(that is down below). It was a bit scary. I stayed in my car at first then got brave and go t out to get closer. Mind you I left the car door open just in case. I was only like 6feet from the eagle. The one rainbow with a bit of town is in the Dutch Harbor side where most of the business happens. The other rainbow shot happened a few minutes later when I drove down the road and was going to take some bird shots and the rainbow was still there. I couldn't get back far enough to capture the whole arc. I was on a rocky edge of the beach but thought it was pretty.

Well I hope you enjoy these pictures of my outing. It was one of those days with all kinds of weather from beautiful sun to sideways rain. Just like home. hehe. The snow is creeping down the mountains but everyone says that's where it stays. So we shall see, winter is just beginning. It would be nice to get some snow the kids always enjoy it. They are calling for a mix all week long and its not getting above 40, so we shall see. Maybe my next photos will be of snow.

After Lizzy's basketball game we had to run to the grocery store and I noticed the sun was setting. It's not very vibrant but now I know where to go for some pics. Over to the left is the landing strip for the airport. This is looking out into the bearing Sea......next stop Russia.

This eagle was taken on our way too. I like the one with his beak open it looks like he's yellin at something. The truth be known he is looking into a dumpster for the Grand Aleutian Hotel. There were ravens in the dumpster. So it's not so glamorous but I will "shoot" them wherever I get the chance. They are something I never get tired of seeing.

First Win!

Well Lizzy's team won their first game of the season. They are 1-3, it was a great game. Kept me on the edge of my seat the whole time. Lizzy is doing great for her first year. As the season has gone on she is getting more aggressive and it's great to watch her grow. This team is pretty tough and we were tied at the half 10-10. The win came right down to the end. It was great. This team definitely needed a win, they all had great big smiles on their face.

I got pretty close to this young eagle, was a bit scary. Chris said I better be able to get into the truck quick because I was on my own. hehe
This is baby Elizabeth. I played softball with her mom and turns out she needs a sitter a few days a week. Our first 2 days went well. She really likes the kids and the cats. She's only 9 months old and were having fun with her.
I need to find out the names of these birds. They are very pretty and colorful.

Lizzy and I went over to the court across the street from our house. The weather was holding out so we decided to take advantage of it. It's kinda like K-town , you have to get out when the sun peaks out. It's fun having a digital camera and being able to play. We thought these frames were neat and they are all in a row. On Friday's in Tommy's class I'm helping out for art class. It has been alot of fun getting to know his classmates and teacher Mrs O'Malley. Chris and I went and had lunch at school with him but as you can see he sat with his friends instead of us. It looks like they are racing to get out to the playground.

This is Tommy's friend Buddy. He had a crazy mohawk when school started. They are making paper bag Jack-O-Lanterns. I got to sit in the middle of the table and keep them on task and not painting on each other. I'm really enjoying it. I usually end up staying for the rest of the day, which is science and that's fun too. Being in 3rd grade is fun. Thought it might be fun to put some pictures of
Tommy's classmates.

Well we've been here for almost 2 months and

huge sandy beach that gets some pretty good rolling waves. The field is looking out
toward Summer Bay. It is one of the places where we have found the wild horses.
Yes wild horses. They were pets at one time, I'm not sure how long ago and now they
roam free and like people. We went for our 2nd try on Sat to see them and found them and were able to feed them carrots out of the car by hand. They got to be abit pushy after the
first few carrots. It was kinda funny a bit scary not being horse people and not sure how to handle them. One on Chris' side of the car one of them tried to eat the wind barrier above the window. That's when we decided to go.

Here's 2 pics of the bay where we last saw the horses. I'm not sure what its called but it is very large and has a great beach. It is still wierd when were at the beach to realize that it is the Bering Sea and not the Pacific.

OK well just got done trying to upload some more pics but its being stubborn. So I guess these will have to do for now. Will try to get some of the kids up soon. I have a great one of Lizzy eating a Deep Fried Twinkie! And let me tell ya they are one of the yummiest things I have had. So farewell for now. Will try later today to get some more uploaded. We miss ya all in K-town, but are enjoying our time here.
